The School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.
The Assistant or Associate Professor in Indigenous Environmental Stewardship will be an Environmental Scientist who researches aquatic, terrestrial and/or atmospheric systems in contexts relevant to SES and Indigenous communities, such as ecological restoration, remediation, climate change impacts and adaptations, northern agriculture, or mining impacts. Candidates with research interests examining policy development and planning or community sustainability will also be considered. Candidates will be expected to build a successful research program and to collaborate with researchers, nationally and internationally. The successful candidate must have a PhD in Environmental Science or a related discipline by the start of the appointment. The candidate will demonstrate leadership and experience in working with Indigenous Knowledge and pedagogy, and experience engaging and working within First Nations, Inuit or Métis communities. Candidates will demonstrate significant potential for research excellence and will be expected to build a strong publication record in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals.
The position will require the development of an externally funded research program involving the mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, with particular attention to the mentorship needs of Indigenous students. Candidates must have relationships with First Nations, Inuit or Métis communities and organizations, including those within the region and province, or demonstrate the clear capacity to build relationships with regional Indigenous communities and organizations. The successful candidate will be a significant contributor to the design and delivery of courses in the new undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Indigenous Environmental Stewardship (BIES) program. This program will explore relationships between Indigenous and Western knowledge systems in the context of addressing environmental problem-solving and policymaking, including environmental assessment. The successful candidate will have a clear potential for effective teaching, with classroom experience considered an asset, with experience in facilitating classroom diversity and inclusivity a strong asset. Strong communication skills are essential. Faculty in SES are expected to provide service to the University, to the scientific community, and society at large. The position’s University service commitment will focus on supporting the IES major, including advising of students in the program and representing the program internally and externally as it evolves.
The School of Environmental Sciences is a multi-disciplinary academic unit with researchers in a range of fields including soil science, geology, agricultural meteorology, forest and ecosystem science, environmental microbiology, environmental toxicology, entomology and plant pathology. The School is home to the University of Guelph Arboretum. Researchers in the School have links across campus including Geography, Engineering, Integrative Biology, the Centre for Applied Groundwater Research, Animal Biosciences, Ridgetown Campus and Plant Agriculture, as well as with producer organizations and members of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
