Position Description:

The Department of Clinical Studies at the University of Guelph invites applications for the Kim & Stu Lang Professor in Community Medicine, a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

The Kim & Stu Lang Community Healthcare Partnership Program at the Ontario Veterinary College aims to identify, understand and remove barriers that impede access to healthcare for animals.

The Kim & Stu Lang Professor in Community Medicine will oversee and manage research programs related to the Community Healthcare Partnership Program (CHPP). They will secure sustainable funding to support the research enterprise, including funding for graduate students and research administration. They will liaise and collaborate with researchers from disciplines other than their own expertise, to prioritize interdisciplinary, one health, community-engaged projects that demonstrate the impact of CHPP as well as the scholarship of learning. As the body of work grows, the Kim & Stu Lang Professor in Community Medicine will be a sector leader with a national and international reputation and be able to produce evidence-based best practices and guidelines that are suitable for the sector. The Kim & Stu Lang Professor will also be responsible for coordinating the curriculum related to CHPP in Phases I-III of the DVM training and aligning this with the integrated clinical skills training program. They will either personally deliver or collaborate with other content experts to deliver lectures, small group or experiential learning activities that foster an understanding of the complex issues that underscore and contribute to inadequate access to veterinary care and the merits of various economic models to address inadequate access to veterinary care, the importance of the human-animal bond in vulnerable communities, and the important issues and priorities of the animal welfare/animal sheltering sector.

Candidates with advanced research degrees at the doctoral level or candidates with demonstrated research productivity and scholarship will be given preference for consideration in this position. Research experience in one (or preferably more) of the following key areas of interdisciplinary research are being sought: scholarship of teaching and learning, Indigenous relations, poverty, human-animal bond, intercultural competence or measurement of socioeconomic impact of accessing veterinary care. A veterinary medical degree is preferable but is not a requirement of the position. Familiarity or previous experience within the profession or companion animal sector, teaching experience in University academic settings or teaching impact in other practical settings will be considered an asset.
