Position Description:

Internal applicants are sought for the position of Director, School of English and Theatre Studies, in the College of Arts at the University of Guelph.

Applicants will be at Associate or Full Professor rank and hold a PhD or terminal degree in a discipline relevant to the School. The mandate is for a five-year term starting July 1, 2021. Responsibilities and conditions around the position of Director are outlined in Article 20 of the Collective Agreement.

The School has diverse strengths in Improvisation Studies; Colonial, Postcolonial, and Diasporic Studies; Canadian Literature; Early Modern Studies; Media, Technology and Literacy in the Humanities; Studies in Performance and Politics; Sexuality and Gender Studies; and Transnational Nineteenth-Century Studies. Award-winning and dynamic faculty complement a renewed infrastructure. Innovative and agile majors and minors allow English and Theatre Studies students to examine a wide range of literatures of different historical periods and geographical locations and connect them to current debates on critical theory, cultural studies, and gender studies.

The applicant must have strong academic qualifications in teaching and scholarship, relevant experience in university administration, the ability to work well in a collegial and consultative atmosphere, the ability to lead a team across the different areas of curriculum and research within the school, and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and research. The Director will work closely with the College Dean, the Associate Deans, and other Chairs/Directors for the benefit of the School and of the College. It will be essential for the Director to maintain effective communication between the School and the College, and between themself and the members of the School. The Director will work to encourage the School’s growth, manage its affairs in accordance with the overall strategic plans of the College and the University, and articulate the school’s academic vision to the university community and beyond. The Director plays a leadership role regarding the School’s commitment to Anti-Racism, Equity, Inclusivity, and Decolonization as articulated in the School’s EDID statement, https://www.uoguelph.ca/arts/sets/edid. The Director also plays a leadership role in the administration of the Creative Writing MFA currently located at Guelph Humber and works closely with the graduate program of the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation at the Guelph campus. The Director will work closely with the Associate Dean Academic and Director of Interdisciplinary Programs on interdisciplinary programs in the College such as Culture, Technology and Society and others in development. The Director will take on a key role in managing staff in the school and work with the Senior Development of the College on alumni and development. More generally, the Director will also provide the high level of leadership and energy necessary to facilitate individual faculty members’ research and teaching, the goals of the School, and institutional goals in the years ahead.
