The College of Biological Science at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of One Health, as part of a campus-wide initiative in this area. This position is connected with the development of a new interdisciplinary undergraduate program in One Health that will be led by the College of Biological Science.
One Health embodies an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to understanding, managing, and mitigating health challenges and promoting states of health at local, regional, and global scales, and rests on three equally important pillars: 1) human health, 2) non-human animal and plant health, and 3) environment and ecosystem health. The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Integrative Biology, but will be expected to maintain a productive relationship with at least one other department in the college (Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences and/or Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology) through either a cross-appointment or adjunct appointment. As such, candidates should have primary expertise in a field connected to environment/ecosystem health and/or wildlife, but with strong links to at least one of the other pillars of One Health. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in the Department of Integrative Biology and possibly another CBS department, including developing and delivering content specifically related to the new interdisciplinary undergraduate major in One Health. It is also expected that the successful candidate will contribute significantly to the success of the university-wide graduate and research programs in One Health.
A Ph.D. and relevant postdoctoral experience in an area consistent with the One Health perspective and suitable for appointment in the Department of Integrative Biology will be required, along with evidence of strong potential to establish a productive, externally-funded research program, including effective mentorship of graduate students. The successful candidate may employ any number of approaches, ranging from theoretical to experimental, and can be either field- or lab-based. We are especially interested in candidates whose focus is on promoting and maintaining a state of health at one or more levels of biological organization (organisms, populations, ecosystems, global environment/climate), within the broad context of the environment and ecosystem health pillar of One Health. This may involve the study of any taxonomic group(s) or habitat(s), including vertebrates, invertebrates, plants, fungi, and/or microbes in terrestrial, marine, or freshwater environments. Researchers who make use of cutting-edge approaches or tools or innovative methodologies to foster interdisciplinary collaborations would be especially appropriate. Applicants must also demonstrate a commitment to effective and innovative teaching at the undergraduate level and be able to take a leadership role within the new One Health undergraduate major.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary department with ~35 faculty and an excellent record of research in ecology, evolutionary biology, conservation biology, biodiversity, and comparative animal physiology encompassing a wide range of taxa and levels of biological organization from molecules to ecosystems. The successful candidate will have access to a variety of sophisticated core facilities such as the Advanced Analysis Centre, Hagen Aqualab, Limnotron, Phytotron, and field research sites and stations on and off campus. The research statement (2 pages max) should present a vision of the long-term goals of the research program and explain how it will promote interdisciplinarity in a One Health context across departments in the college, as well as several short-term goals (e.g., 1-2 examples of graduate student projects that could be completed within a five-year time frame). The teaching statement (2 pages max) should describe an overall teaching philosophy, provide examples of specific teaching strategies that have been used effectively in previous courses, and summarize potential teaching contributions in the department. The diversity statement (1 page max) should describe the strategies you plan to use to ensure your research, teaching, and mentorship activities provide equitable opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds and to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment in your courses and research group.
