Position Description:
The School of Engineering at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track teaching focused position at the Assistant Professor level.
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in electrical or computer engineering and a doctorate in computer engineering (or similar). Applicants must have teaching experience at the University level and have a demonstrated record of teaching excellence. We are particularly interested in applicants who have a strong teaching record in computer engineering courses. Eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario within five years of hiring is a requirement of this position.
We seek candidates whose teaching, research, and service interests reflect our School’s values and complement our existing strengths.
Qualified applicants will be able to teach and develop computer engineering undergraduate and graduate courses, and to contribute to broader computer engineering curricular development. The successful candidate will develop a nationally recognized research program, which may be discipline specific or focused in engineering education and pedagogy. They will mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and provide service within and external to the University. The successful candidate will lead aspects of the School’s Graduate Attributes process.
Teaching focused faculty must have the expertise to teach a large number of courses: the successful candidate will be able to teach a diverse range of fundamental Computer Engineering courses in the first and second year (e.g., programming, digital systems, electric circuits), a selection of core third and fourth year courses (e.g., computer organization, computer architecture), and some graduate courses (e.g., optimization, introduction to machine learning).
Candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activity. To provide evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry, applicants must submit a teaching dossier that includes: a teaching statement describing philosophy, approach, interests, and experience in pedagogical settings including classroom, engineering design instruction, laboratory, tutorials, workshops, small group and individual mentorship; awards and accolades; and evidence of successful teaching (e.g., peer evaluations or unsolicited student feedback).
Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) are essential to academic excellence. To provide evidence of a commitment to EDI, applicants must submit a statement with their application. The statement may include content such as views, experiences, and plans for fostering EDI.
Preference will be given to the candidate who will combine excellence in teaching with a demonstrated capacity to conduct novel, interdisciplinary research that will expand and complement our current research strengths. Preference will be given to individuals with a proven background in accreditation and/or graduate attributes.
The School has particular strength and emphasis in design, and therefore candidates with strengths in design and engineering design pedagogy are preferred. The ideal candidate will contribute to the ongoing development of the School’s engineering design curriculum and will collaborate with other School faculty to integrate engineering design more broadly across the Computer Engineering undergraduate program.
The University of Guelph has well-established and accredited undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Systems and Computing, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Water Resources Engineering. At present, the School is comprised of over 62 faculty members, 34 staff and technicians, 1700 undergraduate students and 350 graduate students.
