Position Description:
The Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) at the University of Guelph invites applications for the position of Director, School of Environmental Sciences (SES).
The School of Environmental Sciences is a multi-disciplinary academic unit with researchers in a range of fields including: soil science, geology, agricultural meteorology, forest and ecosystem science, environmental microbiology, environmental toxicology, entomology and plant pathology. Researchers in the School have links across campus including Geography, Engineering, Integrative Biology, the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, the Centre for Applied Groundwater Research, Animal Biosciences and Plant Agriculture, as well as with producer organizations and members of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Natural Resources Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Faculty within the School are located at both Guelph and Ridgetown campuses. SES has dynamic undergraduate programs in Environmental Biology, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Management, and Indigenous Environmental Science & Practice. SES’ MSc and PhD programs attract students worldwide and are supported by $10M in research funds. Descriptions of the School, its programs, and faculty profiles. The Director is responsible for the orderly, effective, efficient and collegial operation of the School. They provide leadership for initiatives identified by the faculty members and support individuals in the fulfillment of their assigned responsibilities. The Director, through consultation with members of the School, is responsible for enhancing academic programs, increasing contributions to knowledge, strengthening relationships with industry and other potential partners, and promoting the School to the public. The appointment will be for a five-year term, with a possibility of renewal for a second five-year term.
The preferred candidate will be a successful educator and leader holding a tenured faculty appointment at the University of Guelph, with an exemplary record of research and scholarly accomplishments. The Director will be required to offer vision and leadership, demonstrate innovative thinking, and exhibit strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Experience in human and financial resource management and the ability to engage faculty, staff, and students in developing and executing new initiatives are required. The Director will have a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with industry, government agencies, and alumni, including the development of funding and support for scholarly programs. The successful candidate will also have the ability to network, communicate, and facilitate the advancement of Environmental Sciences, OAC, and the University.
