Position Description:

The Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) at the University of Guelph invites applications from internal University of Guelph applicants only for the position of Chair of the Department of Animal BioSciences at the Associate or Full Professor rank.

The Department of Animal BioSciences is a multi-disciplinary academic unit with faculty in a range of fields including: animal physiology, genetics, behaviour and welfare, nutrition and management. Faculty in the School have links across campus including computer science, engineering, human health and nutritional sciences, biological sciences, food, agricultural and resource economics, and food science, as well as with producer organizations and members of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The Department has dynamic undergraduate programs in Agriculture and Animal Biology and their MSc and PhD programs attract students worldwide and are supported by extensive research funds. The Chair of the Department is responsible for the orderly, effective, efficient, sustainable and collegial operation of the Department. They provide leadership for initiatives identified by the faculty members and support individuals in the fulfillment of their assigned responsibilities. The Chair, through consultation with members of the Department, is responsible for enhancing academic programs, increasing contributions to knowledge, and strengthening relationships with industry and other potential partners. The Chair is also responsible for leading the fiscal sustainability of the Department and the development of Departmental strategies and tactics in that regard. The Chair is also expected to work closely with the OAC Deans office in this regard and in collaboration with their academic unit head colleagues across OAC. This includes the development and evolution of budget plans which include revenue targets and plans to meet those targets. The appointment will be for a five-year term, with a possibility of renewal for a second five-year term.

The preferred candidate will be a successful educator and leader holding a tenured faculty appointment at the University of Guelph, with a good record of research and scholarly accomplishments and substantive experience in and a dedication to teaching and student success. The Chair will be required to offer vision and leadership, demonstrate innovative thinking, and exhibit strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Experience in human and financial resource management and the ability to engage faculty, staff, and students in developing and executing new initiatives are required. The Chair will have a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with industry, government agencies, and alumni, including the development of funding and support for scholarly programs. The successful candidate will also have the ability to network, communicate, and facilitate the advancement of the Department, OAC, and the University.
