Position Description:
The School of Computer Science at the University of Guelph invites applications for two (2) tenure-track positions at the Assistant Professor level, with specialties in one of the following areas: AI and Big Data, AI and Software Engineering, or Human-computer interaction (HCI). The expected start date for both positions is November 1, 2023 and no later than January 1, 2024.
Qualifications:
Education and Background: At the time of appointment, candidates are required to have a PhD in Computer Science or a related field. Those with previous academic experience, including post-doctoral or prior academic appointments, as well as research technician roles, will be considered an asset. Relevant industrial experience will also be taken into consideration.
Scholarship: The successful candidate should have remarkable research in Computer Science with demonstrated impact. Preference will be given for those working in the areas of the hiring. However, exceptional candidates in all fields of Computer Science will be considered. The candidate must propose an independent and fundable research program in their Research Statement and demonstrate their ability to conduct innovative research that complements the school’s current research strengths. Preference will be given to candidates whose research programs foster economic growth and improve the lives of Canadians.
Teaching: The candidate must have a keen interest in undergraduate and graduate teaching. They must demonstrate their ability to teach university-level courses that align with their background. They should be capable of teaching core computer science undergraduate courses at all levels and graduate courses related to their research area. Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in supervising students and/or staff on research-oriented projects.
Service: Evidence of community engagement is crucial, such as organizing conferences, participating in outreach, volunteering, or being involved in student clubs or councils. Such evidence demonstrates the candidate's ability to provide service to the School, University, and research community.
Expectations
The successful candidate is expected to establish an internationally recognized research program and secure external funding from tri-council agencies (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR) or similarly prestigious funding agencies. They will also be expected to supervise graduate students in the current MSc and PhD programs. The candidate will typically teach three courses per year at the undergraduate and graduate levels. 80% of their time will be divided equally between research and teaching, with the remaining 20% for providing service to the School, College, University, and research community at large.
School of Computer Science: The School has 5 undergraduate programs with 954 undergraduate students and 4 graduate programs with 108 graduate students. It is currently in a growth cycle that could see undergraduate and graduate enrolments increase significantly. The School of Computer Science is currently comprised of 26 faculty and 11 staff.
