The Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition is unique within the University of Guelph as an interdisciplinary academic unit focused on the enhancement of the quality of all forms of human development in diverse communities.
Since its inception within one of the founding colleges, the Department has been interdisciplinary in pursuit of its mandate to respond to the evolution of contemporary issues affecting families in their social contexts. Through continuing development as an academic unit of provincial, national and international stature, the faculty promotes excellence in education, research and service.
The emphasis on both theoretical and basic/applied research continues to have impact on professional practice, social and health policy, and the design of interventions and preventive strategies. Throughout training in the BASc, MSc and PhD programs, the faculty focus on preparation of leaders in the fields of family relationships, human development and aging, and health and human nutrition. These programs are committed to rigorous standards in scholarship, providing motivation for faculty and students to continue independent life-long learning, and the promotion of individual and group involvement in interdisciplinary scholarship.
