Experiential Learning

The Practicum Experience

Practicum and field placement opportunities enable students to integrate theory and practice. Practica are integral components of the BASc degree. The combination of a strong curriculum and supervised practical applications transform students into highly skilled professionals who specialize in enhancing quality of life for individuals and families. Graduates will be well prepared to make a difference in the lives of others.

The Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition has a long history of offering practicum experiences to our undergraduate students. Students tell us that it is within the practicum that all of the classroom learning comes together. Many of our field supervisors are alumni of our programs who want to provide students with important experiential learning opportunities. Our students are found in elementary and high schools, alternative education programs, hospitals, group homes, mental health services, retirement facilities as well as community centres.

We offer practicum opportunities in the following programs:

The BASc Practicum Co-ordinator

The BASc Practicum Coordinator connects with students, field instructors and faculty to deliver the practicum component of both undergraduate majors. They meet with students to match student interest and learning objectives with available placements. They meet with field instructors and organization representatives to support and cultivate field placements that meet both student and community needs. They also teach a number of practicum courses and contribute to curriculum development and evaluation.
