In tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate areas cultivated for the sweet tubers which contain up to 47% sugars and starch, 20% oil, and 8% proteins. They can be eaten raw or roasted, are made into special beverages, or the tasty oil is extracted for human consumption. The plant is able to grow on saline soils and is therefore sometimes used for recultivation purposes. In India it is employed as Ayurvedic drug (1). |
