The spontaneous area of this old cultivated plant is not known truly. Probably it came from Middle Asia and the regions southwards to the Himalayas. Already in former times introduced as vegetable and medicinal plant worldwide. It belongs to the oldest drugs in SE Asia. In China highly estimated as vegetable in former times, today only sometimes cultivated here(1). |
