Worldwide cultivated as an annual, in warmer climates also as a perennial ornamental, frequently naturalized in the Mediterranean. Formerly cultivated in Russia and Persia for the production of oil from the seeds (beginning of 19th cent.). Today grown as a medicinal plant in Iraq. Formerly also medicinal plant in Central Europe (Herba Antirrhinum vel Oronti majoris) for treating wounds and abscesses. Important plant for genetic experiments(1). |
