Grown in English herb gardens already before 1500 AD.The roots have been used officinally (diuretic, spasmolytic) in Europe. Young roots and shoots eaten as a vegetable, young leaves consumed as a salad in N Europe and Greece. Formerly candied roots, as those of Eryngium campestre L., valued as aphrodisiac tonic especially in England.Today mainly cultivated for ornament(1). |
