Research Findings: Objective 5
Objective 5: Evaluate the Strengths and Weaknesses of this Approach
A strength of this research is the accuracy of the prediction model. Based off of previously explained accuracy testing, the model generates a highly accurate output. A primary weakness of this approach is the over-simplification of the crop yield factors. While the formula has been proven to create accurate predictions of crop yield, based off of accuracy between past actual yields and past predicted yields using the formula, it is still a highly simplistic formula. It is simplistic in that it only calculates yield based on two factors, precipitation and temperature. In reality, there are countless factors affecting crop yield including solar radiation, atmospheric humidity and pests. A more complete formula involving more factors would have created a more accurate analysis of future crop yield, however it is beyond the scope of this research. Additionally, the model is Ontario specific. Different regions have different climate change variations and different crops respond to inputs differently which would impact the accuraccy of the model.
