The purpose of this study was to identify areas on the islands of Oahu and Kauai that are vulnerable to coastal erosion due to human activity/development. Concentrations of development, such as urban areas and tourism infrastructure that occur directly at the coast are identified through the coastal vulnerability maps. Areas affected by dams, which are located more inland, are represented by watershed vulnerability maps. Coastal erosion poses a threat to those who reside close to the coast. Therefore, with increasing amounts of urban growth and tourism, as well as the use of dams for hydroelectric power, it is important to place a focus on human activity so that it’s impact on coasts is not exacerbated. By combining these human variables and determining areas of high concern, further studies may be conducted to develop ways in which human impact on coastal areas can be minimized.
