Research Findings - Objective 3

Apply the model to the City of Guelph to determine the most suitable location for marijuana dispensaries.

Multiple factors and constraints were applied to the City of Guelph to determine the most suitable location for a cannabis dispensary. After the implimentation of the model on the city, there were 26 possible dissemination areas (DAUID) approved for the development of a storefront. Of these 26 locations, the highest ranking DAUID's include:

DAUID Suitability Score Location
35230378 75 York Road and Victoria, near Clythe Creek
35230379 72 York Road and Watson Parkway or Corner of Starwood and Frasson
352303501 54 Cowan Place off of Southgate and Laird Road
35230382 53 Near Stone Road and Gordan Street / Beside Best Western on Monticello Cres.

The ranked dissemination areas above represent the summation of constraints and criteria that were utilized in the creation of the model that was ultimately applied to the city. These areas are the most suitable locations for a cannabis dispensary that will have the smallest impact on youths and the general public. As illsutrated in the suitability score associated with each DAUID, there is a significant drop off between the top two dissemination areas and the third and fourth ranked areas. This is due to the fact that the City of Guelph is a spatially balanced city, as in there are few areas that are absent of schools, parks, places of worship, ect. For a visual explaination as to why these areas were the only DAUIDs available for development of a dispensary follow the link below to find the impact that each limitation output had towards the location of a storefront.

  • These maps indicate the limitations set by identified criteria and constraints.
