Admission Requirements

Students must meet the specific admission requirements of their selected collaborating department. See list of departments.  If you are uncertain of which department you should pursue, please contact the Graduate Coordinator for assistance.

If English is not your first language, you will be required to submit the results of a standardized language test.

Master's Specific Requirements:

  • University's general requirement: A four year Honours degree, or equivalent, from a recognized post-secondary institution with a B- average over the last two years of full-time equivalent study. *Please note that some departments set their admission requirement higher than B-.

  • Recommended: Familiarity with the social sciences. It is recommended that applicants have completed one undergraduate course in economics (preferably micro-economics), one other undergraduate course in a social science discipline (Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science or International Development) and one course in social science resesarch methods (qualitative or quantitative).

PhD Specific Requirements:

  • University's general requirement:  A recognized Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in a relevant discipline.  In exceptional cases, applicants with a very strong undergraduate record who meet program-specific criteria may be admitted directly into a PhD program.

  • A strong background in the social sciences, experience in development research and/or development practice, and stated research interests relating to international development.
