Why I Chose Guelph…

I love the University of Guelph for its interactive and student-friendly atmosphere. This social environment makes life a lot easier, especially when your work in the lab might not be going the way you want it to go. Another reason why I chose the University of Guelph is for the different educational resources and groups that exist. For example, I have become quite involved with educational development, and I have designed numerous workshops and events to help improve the quality of our graduate teaching assistants. To sum it all up, I feel like the University of Guelph has been instrumental in my improvement as a scientist, and I also feel like it has allowed me to become a well-rounded individual overall.

About My Advisor…

I have an incredibly positive relationship with my advisor, Dr. Bakovic. I feel that I really identify with her strengths as a very direct, straightforward communicator, and as someone that really stands up for her students. I cannot understate how much it means to have an advisor who has your back when things are not going according to plan. She is a great mentor and I see her communication skills as something that I personally try to emulate.

About the City of Guelph…

Guelph has a little bit of everything. It is a city, but not an overly large city. There is a lot to do, but at the same time maintains a relaxing vibe. As a result, I feel like the City of Guelph has something that everyone can enjoy or identify with, no matter how small of a town or how large of a city you come from. I love being able to have the University and everything that I need (i.e. groceries, bank, etc.) within a 10 minute walk. That makes the amenities in Guelph accessible, which is quite important to me as a graduate student.

Being a Graduate Student at Guelph…

It is awesome being a graduate student at the University of Guelph! At the University of Guelph, tons of organizations and initiatives designed to improve graduate student life. One example is the dissertation workshops organized by the library on campus. Another example is the Graduate Teaching Community, which facilitates discussions and workshops related to the role of teaching in graduate students. In addition, there are usually various activities organized by the various departments here on campus. In HHNS, we have intramural teams and journal clubs to help facilitate a collaborative and interactive atmosphere whereby everyone is included and everyone is welcome. I have found these departmental events to be very important in improving my life as a graduate student because I have found these events to help me understand the dynamics of my workplace.

My Future Plans…

To be honest, I do not have a definitive answer. In a perfect world, I would be doing something that incorporated my scientific background and my teaching-related interests. A big thing that I have come to realize here at the University of Guelph is that most disciplines are actually interrelated, which allows for some intriguing opportunities. As a result, I feel like my diverse interests have allowed me to find ongoing opportunities and to meet a variety of different people who have helped me further explore my interests and potential career paths.

Other Thoughts…

It is a great opportunity to be a graduate student at the University of Guelph. The possibilities really are endless here, and there are so many opportunities that exist. These opportunities can have a profound effect on how we form our career paths. In addition, we have a very inclusive and collaborative environment, which really enables you to shape your own path. Overall, being a graduate student at the University of Guelph is an experience that allows for exponential individual growth. What makes graduate studies at the University of Guelph unique is the degree of collaborative interaction.

About the Campus…

The campus is conveniently located within walking distance of major banks, groceries stores and even the largest mall in the city. I feel that this is very important, as accessibility is a critical factor for students when choosing where to study. In addition, I love that there is the new state-of-the-art Athletic Centre at the east end of campus, which has endless health and wellness facilities.
