Under the direction from the Farm Manager of the New Liskeard Agricultural Research Station, the Agricultural Assistant participates in the general running of the beef herd: care and husbandry of beef cows, calves and steers; operating feeding equipment; managing pastures; cleaning pens; checking for health problems and providing care; applying manure and fertilizer; preparing land; seeding, spraying and harvesting; following research protocols and observing and recording animal behavior; performing maintenance and repairs of the building, land and farm equipment, and other duties as assigned.

Requirements of the position include:

  • Community college diploma in Agriculture or other related education and one (1) year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid G license required
  • Thorough understanding of livestock behavior, handling, observation and health with proven experience performing livestock management manipulations including castration, tattooing, hoof trimming, giving injections, dehorning, application of medicines, birthing and processing newborns
  • Ability to handle animals patiently, gently and confidently
  • Knowledge and experience with cropping and pasture management
  • Experience in operating, calibrating and maintaining farm equipment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work in wet and dusty environments and outside under severe weather conditions
  • Physical strength and stamina are requirements of the positions, including the ability to lift over 45 kg on a regular basis, as is the flexibility to work shifts, weekends, holidays and long days as required, sometimes on short notice

Normal Hiring Range              $23.60 – $26.37 per hour
