As one of six (6) Custodial Supervisors in Physical Resources, you will be part of a team responsible for the provision of custodial services in campus buildings and student residences. Specific responsibilities include: supervising a team of approximately 30 unionized staff carrying out custodial duties; scheduling and assigning work; inspecting work, evaluating performance and advising staff on corrective measures; motivating staff; instructing staff on procedures and in the use of materials and equipment; participating in attendance management, discipline meetings, & performance discussions, maintaining daily records, ; requisitioning supplies, equipment, and parts; testing new products and making recommendations; ensuring staff are aware of and following relevant University and Physical Resources policies, procedures, and safety regulations,; ensuring compliance with the applicable collective agreement; working with other Physical Resources supervisors, including others in Custodial Services as well as the maintenance departments; liaising and problem-solving with other University departments on service, operating problems, work scheduling and other issues; supervising the preparation for special events; and other associated duties as assigned.  The incumbent may be required to work on any custodial shift as assigned, with appropriate notice.  Any applicant from off-campus, if selected as the successful candidate, will need to provide an acceptable Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector screening at their own expense as a condition of employment.

Requirements of the position include:  Community College education and a minimum of 10 progressive years of experience in the field of Custodial Services, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a large institutional setting.  Previous supervisory experience in a unionized environment is also required.  Other requirements include:  knowledge of custodial best practices and procedures; knowledge of the care and operation of institutional cleaning equipment; excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills; record-keeping and budgeting skills; training skills; a working knowledge of WHMIS and the Occupational Health and Safety Act; basic computer skills (internet email, Word, databases); and proven ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
