Reporting to the Senior Manager, Operations and Service Delivery, the Assistant Manager, Operations and Service Delivery is responsible for managing the clinical and client services teams at the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre (OVC HSC) by exemplifying the vision and values of the OVC HSC.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  1. Effective Team Leadership: of 5 Supervisors and approximately 90 full-time employees in the OVC HSC (Large Animal Hospital, Companion Animal Hospital and Animal Cancer Centre). In collaboration with the Supervisors, ensure personnel and resources are effectively utilized to support all areas of the hospital. Coach and mentor the team to promote professional development and a supportive environment that delivers outstanding client service to internal and external stakeholders.
  2. Operational Management: including the development of goals, action plans and metrics to increase operational efficiency and workforce effectiveness. Goals should consider various stakeholders: patients, clients, staff, students, public, OVC, and University of Guelph and will be measured against client satisfaction levels and financial savings from process improvements. Respond in a timely manner to complex and urgent demands. Exercise effective problem solving skills and innovative thinking to identify and resolve clinical service issues.
  3. Assist with Operational and Facility issues as well as forecasting personnel budgets, employee concerns, grievances, arbitrations and coaching and mentoring supervisors to ensure professional development and leadership skills for all reports.
  4. Improve Workflow, Safety and Biosafety: by ensuring the OVC HSC operates safely, effectively and efficiently in accordance with OVC HSC, University of Guelph and other regulatory policies and procedures. In collaboration with the OVC HSC management team, develop, recommend, and ensure OVC-HSC SOPs and guidelines are communicated and followed.

Requirements of the positon include:

  • Undergraduate degree plus some related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Proven experience successfully leading a diverse team of employees;
  • Demonstrated ability to create cohesion and cooperation among staff members;
  • Experience operating in a unionized environment is an asset;
  • Strong relationship building skills and the ability to gain trust and respect among all levels within a complex organization and among client groups;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of service, responsible stewardship, community responsiveness and respect;
  • Ability to support effective service delivery to clients, particularly in challenging circumstances;
  • Evidence of strong organizational skills as well as initiative and follow through;
  • Proficiency with MS Office Applications including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Flexibility in scheduling availability; the incumbent will be required to work a variety of shifts including evenings and weekends.  Hours may be subject to change based on operational need.
