The Department of Student Experience requires an experienced professional to provide leadership in neighbourhood engagement, town and gown relations, and services for off-campus and commuter students. Reporting to the Director, Student Experience, the Coordinator works with off-campus students, on-campus students considering a move to off-campus living, and commuter students. They act as an advisor for students seeking information regarding landlord-tenant relations and the rental housing market in Guelph. The Successful incumbent will assess need, design, and deliver programs that meet the changing needs of off-campus and commuter students on rental living, tenant safety, tenant rights, being a good neighbour, and the student commuter experience.

In the course of their duties, the Coordinator responds to neighbourhood concerns regarding student behaviour in the community with the purpose of advising students, identifying inappropriate behaviour, identifying responses to the concern, and facilitating conflict resolution processes amongst off-campus students, neighbourhood residents, and landlords. They create and maintain a broad network of community partners to help facilitate communication, coordinate approaches, and encourage neighbourhood engagement in local neighbourhoods where students live. The Coordinator represents the department and institution on University and community committees to provide expertise pertaining to neighbourhood relations and the experiences of off-campus and commuter students.

The Coordinator oversees the budget for Neighbourhood Relations and Off-Campus Living and participates in annual budgeting and forecasting processes and will supervise and provide direction for approximately 4 part-time student staff and 10 Peer Helpers.

To be successful in this role, the incumbent is required to have:

  • An Undergraduate Degree (Master’s Preferred) in community development, social work, community psychology, or another related field, coupled with a minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience working in community development and higher education.
  • Substantial knowledge of and practical experience working with community partners.
  • An ability to collaborate and lead amongst stakeholders and partners when in conflictual environments.
  • Skills to effectively communicate with students who may be distressed or emotionally distraught, or who may face other difficulties.
  • A strong aptitude in written, verbal, and non-verbal communication.
  • Experience in advising, program design, research, learning outcome development, and assessment.
  • Intermediate to advanced level Microsoft365, including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, is also required.

This appointment is regularly performed on- campus but will be initially fulfilled remotely (off-campus) until the University resumes its regular operations.
