The University of Guelph - Ridgetown Campus is seeking to hire Equine Chore Assistants. The Assistant is a temporary part-time appointment located in Clinton, Ontario at REACH Huron and will support the Associate Diploma Equine Care and Management program.

Reporting to the Equine Facilities Coordinator, the Equine Chore Assistants will be responsible for assisting in chore tasks and horse care, and overseeing and offering guidance to approximately 5-14 students enrolled in the program on their chores and horse handling during chore shifts. 

General duties of the Equine Chore Assistants:

  • Enforce safety protocols, care, and cleanliness standards in accordance with established standards of procedure, while maintaining a professional and disciplined environment
  • Support students by answering basic husbandry questions and occasionally demonstrate how to complete tasks
  • Perform standard barn chores (e.g. mucking stalls, sweeping, etc.) as needed or otherwise as directed by supervisor
  • Accurately document student performance both individually and as a chore group for each shift and provide written feedback to the Equine Facilities Coordinator
  • Monitor and communicate inventory changes to the Equine Facility Coordinator
  • Correspond with Equine Facilities Coordinator regarding decisions related to daily animal care/husbandry
  • Provide care for horses including: cleaning and dressing wounds, applying standing bandages and poultice to legs, or other first aid as needed/directed by supervisor
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements for the position include:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education (courses in Equine Care or equivalent preferred) and a minimum of nine (9) months of experience in a barn assistant role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with barn maintenance (mucking stalls, bedding stalls, sweeping, daily barn cleaning tasks, etc.)
  • Experience with maintenance, care and handling of horses (feeding, watering, leading to/from paddocks, etc.)
  • Experience with handling horses of a variety of breeds and temperaments is required
  • Experience overseeing chore scheduling and performance of students preferred
  • Strong organizational, time management, problem-solving, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team

Flexibility in scheduling availability is required. The incumbents will be required to work a variety of shifts including evenings and weekends.

Classification               OSSTF/TARA, District 35 Salary Band 2
Normal Hiring Range $19.45 – $21.73 per hour
