Working under the leadership and general direction of the Program Manager/Research Scientist and the Research Chair/faculty supervisor, the Laboratory Operations Supervisor is responsible for day-to-day aspects of managing the Hydrothermal Chemistry research laboratory at the University of Guelph.  The incumbent will play a key role in supporting the success of the four (4) laboratories that house sophisticated custom-made high-precision instruments used for measuring the spectroscopic, thermodynamic and transport properties of aqueous fluids at very high temperatures and pressures. Through collaboration with the Program Manager/Research Scientist and in conjunction with the faculty supervisor, the incumbent will be responsible for the following:

  • Supervision of Laboratory Operations – including general lab maintenance / operation and instrument operation, technician scheduling, task assignment, basic purchasing and supply chain support, inventory, coordination with the Dept and other campus entities as needed, and Safety Officer for the Research Group’s laboratories.
  • Operating and maintaining routine laboratory analytical instrumentation and carrying out experiments on one or more specialized instruments as required.
  • Training – including development of highly proficient students and postdoctoral fellows in the use of commercial instruments for chemical analysis, and the use of data acquisition software.
  • Financial Administration Assistance – including assisting the Program Manager with accounting compilations and budget reconciling and assisting with “high value” classified purchases, both NSERC and CFI.
  • Quality Management System – under the direction of the Program Manger, the Lab Manager/Technician will be responsible for maintaining a Quality Management Records System required of our Research Chair program.

To be considered for this position, candidates must demonstrate the following minimum requirements:

  • Hon. B.Sc. in Chemistry from an accredited institution with specialization in physical or analytical chemistry.
  • Minimum 4 years of related professional working experience in a laboratory in a related position
  • Willingness to assist with both laboratory and administrative tasks.
  • A natural leader with excellent teamwork skills, especially in a diverse group setting
  • Results orientation and commitment to a high standard of service
  • Excellent, networking, interpersonal skills and creative problem-solving Work skills
  • Strong MS Office / Outlook skills.
  • Commitment to a culture of safety.
  • Part-time position, regular schedule M-F

Preferred:

  • Good multitasking / project management skills.
  • Experience with quality management systems.
  • Experience with PC computers and scientific hardware / software/ programming.
