The Food Microbiology Lab, Laboratory Services Division is seeking an individual to work with time-sensitive samples in a fast–paced, high-volume environment. Primary duties include: assisting in preparation of food and environmental samples for testing; assisting in plating and transferring enrichments and counting bacterial colonies following established protocols and to appropriate quality standards; entering results in LIMS; assisting with preparation of reagents, culture media and quality controls; assisting with monitoring and ordering supplies, preparing purchase orders and cost analysis; assist in maintaining QA/QC in work area with appropriate documentation; and, maintaining the lab to a high level of cleanliness; and other duties as assigned.

Requirements of the position include:

  • Two-year community college program from a relevant science program combined with related laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience within an ISO 17025 accredited food microbiology laboratory;
  • Demonstrated experience in processing samples; proven self-motivation to work independently and to set/meet priorities within a client-focused, time-sensitive work environment;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills; excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively work with co-workers within a busy team environment and to resolve conflicting priorities;
  • Understanding of QA/QC requirements, laboratory safety practices and WHMIS, as applied within a microbiology laboratory environment;
  • Excellent dexterity and fine motor skills to precisely pipette and prepare samples.  

Hours of work: 35 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, or Tuesday - Saturday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Schedule may change based on operational needs. Occasional overtime is required.
