The University of Guelph main campus sits on 1,200 acres of land and is comprised of 150 buildings with over 7.1 million gross square feet of floor area.  The mechanical infrastructure required to support the campus is complex, intricate, and vast.  The Central Utilities Plant provides steam and chilled required to heat and cool the campus through a network of service tunnels and trenches.  Infrastructure also includes building automation controls, HVAC systems, water purification systems, natural gas, domestic water, raw water, sanitary sewers, storm sewers as well as fire protection and life safety systems.  Reporting to the Manager of Mechanical Design, the Mechanical Design Technologist serves as a key member on the team responsible for the renovation, repair, and modernization of this infrastructure to ensure the safe, reliable, efficient, and effective operation of campus facilities.

Specific responsibilities include the design of various mechanical systems (HVAC, building automation, steam, chilled water, lab systems, etc), site investigations, commissioning, construction review, shop drawing review, coordination with architectural and electrical design teams, and assisting with the development and updating of the campus design standards.  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required to work with clients, stakeholders, contractors, consultants, team members, Authorities Having Jurisdiction, and the campus community in general. Additional requirements include graduation from a college Mechanical Engineering Technologist program, coupled with a minimum three years of experience working in a building systems mechanical services design environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  The successful candidate will be OACETT certified or working toward certification as a Certified Engineering Technologist.

The Design, Engineering, and Construction group is comprised of an amazing group of professional designers, project managers, coordinators, and planners.
