Under the direction of the Manager, Occupational Hygiene and Safety in the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Department, the incumbent will be responsible for promoting occupational health and safety and environmental protection through the development and management of policies and programs, consultations, workplace assessments, training, and regulatory compliance in the specialized area of Occupational Hygiene. The incumbent advises the University community (faculty, staff, students, etc.) and provides technical guidance to consultants and contractors on health and safety matters, evaluates potentially hazardous situations involving many chemical and physical stressors, as well as matters related to general safety, implements hazard control measures and codes of practice for safe working, prepares reports and recommendations using professional judgment, utilizes sophisticated sampling and analytical instruments/techniques, participates on selected Joint Health & Safety Committees, and investigates workplace incidents. The incumbent provides guidance on the Occupational Health and Safety Act and all related legislations, liaises with regulatory bodies, and assists in the formulation and implementation of University policies, guidelines, procedures and codes in the area of health and safety. The incumbent will work within the Health, Safety and Wellness team and contribute his/her expertise to other Health, Safety and Wellness professionals. The University’s health and safety policies and endeavors, directed by the Office of the Vice-President (Finance and Administration) establish additional procedural framework for this position.
Requirements of the position include: Master’s degree in the physical sciences, engineering, occupational hygiene or related discipline and professional certification in Occupational Hygiene [Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)] along with several years’ experience in a similar role. Proven problem recognition and solving abilities; excellent communication and writing skills; tact and diplomacy; effective dispute resolution skills; and strong computer skills are also requirements. Strong knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Environmental Protection Act and familiarity with University safety policies and procedures preferred. A valid Ontario driver’s license, “G” Class is required.
