The Plumber - Residence Building Service Person 2 is under the direct Supervision of the Facilities Manager and is a key person in the Student Housing Operation. Under general supervision, the incumbent is responsible for the safe operation of plumbing and gas fired equipment, installation and repairs as defined the in the Plumber and Gasfitter Trades regulations. This position will also assist other Facilities and Services staff with general maintenance activities.

This position is highly visible and is a key front line position providing daily and emergency service to residents of Student Housing at the Family Housing and West Residence sites.

Typical Duties include: Examining, installing, fabricating, testing, maintaining and replacing:

  • water treatment equipment, piping and controls,
  • drain, waste and vent piping systems,
  • private and public water supply systems,
  • water distribution systems,
  • plumbing fixtures, appliances and trim,
  • private sewage systems,
  • rainwater leaders, supports and hangers for pipe, fixtures and equipment;
  • Installing and maintaining hydronic boilers and controls
  • order material and supplies

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Completing general repairs- painting, drywall repairs, adjusts doors, windows and building components;
  • Maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing gas-fired heating and domestic hot water systems.
  • Maintaining an inventory of various supplies
  • Providing preventative maintenance, inspections, and maintains up-to-date service records.

Requirements of the position include: secondary school graduation coupled with several years related experience maintaining large residential building complexes.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. A gas fitter’s (2) license is essential, and plumbers license is mandatory. Certification in backflow prevention and testing would be considered an asset. The ability to read blueprints and understand the operation of building controls, plumbing systems, interpreting instructions and directions is also required.

The successful candidate requires demonstrated oral and written communication skills; excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills; must be able to work safely, efficiently and with minimal supervision; is customer service focused communicating with tact and diplomacy; and has the ability to work in a busy team environment.

The successful applicant must be available to provide emergency service after hours
