The Program Counsellor is responsible for academic counselling/advising with respect to admission requirements, academic policy and process, supporting students throughout their academic journey. This position reports to the Director’s Office, Associate Director, Academic and works with the academic and administration teams to provide a seamless and engaging student experience to support students’ academic success and well-being. The successful candidate will provide leadership in building a healthy campus culture and community by enhancing the student support and resources as students adapt to the changes and challenges of post-secondary learning, living and wellness. This position promotes student development, success and retention, and encourages achievement by coordinating supporting resources and options.
Requirements for the position include: Completion of an undergraduate degree in Education or Social Services, with three years relevant experience or the equivalent education and experience. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate proven counselling and coaching skills, with problem-solving capability and elevated level of diplomacy, tact, and judgment for dealing with sensitive and confidential matters. Experience should include the ability to present solutions, motivate students, coordinate groups, develop new initiatives and deliver new programs.
The successful candidate must be familiar with University of Guelph undergraduate and associate diploma programs, policies and procedures at Ridgetown Campus as well as the Ontario and Canadian education systems. The incumbent must understand student development theory with awareness, and appreciation of the student process to provide appropriate advice and counsel. The incumbent requires advanced knowledge of various software programs including but not limited to spreadsheets, word processing, and databases software (i.e. Colleague). The successful candidate must be able to work both independently and as part of a team with demonstrated organizational, project and time management skills, and the capacity to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
