Laboratory Services Division is a diverse service laboratory consisting of two operational units: the Animal Health Laboratory and the Agriculture and Food Laboratory. Laboratory Services Division provides analytical and diagnostic testing services to clients in the private sector, government and academia. Reporting to the Manager, Information Technology, the Senior Analyst, Database Services will play a critical role as a member of our Information Technology team as we support LSD’s Database systems and Information Management processes, and implement solutions to meet the needs of our internal and external clients.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Leading the change management and system administration processes required to keep the Database and Information Management systems patched and up to date including assessing security and other risk criteria (e.g Oracle databases, Microsoft SQL Server databases, and various ETL and monitoring tools and processes);
  • Initiating discussions and negotiations to schedule the maintenance work on all environments while taking into account business cycles and information privacy and security compliance requirements, as well as liaising with the key stakeholders;
  • Leading the evaluation and assessment of information integration and transformation processes and identifying options to enhance these processes;
  • Liaising with external consultants and vendors to lead the assessment and implementation of purchased software and systems;
  • Evaluating alternative solutions and recommending appropriate strategies and solutions to partners and clients across the Division;
  • Project planning including determining resource requirements, assigning project tasks, and reporting progress to management and/or clients;
  • Overseeing the enterprise information integration of LSD data from multiple systems, ensuring compliance with security and information governance practices and policies.

Requirements of the position include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Information technology and several years of related work experience with enterprise database systems focusing on Oracle database administration, and also including Microsoft SQL Server database management experience, information management and related services including integration of data across multiple systems, preferably in higher education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Solid working knowledge of Oracle Database v12 and higher;
  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with: Unix/Linux; troubleshooting and resolving database problems; Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO); using monitoring and troubleshooting tools; backups, restores, and recovery models; Disaster Recovery (DR) options for Oracle RDBMS Server; and implementing operational automation using scripts;
  • Expert knowledge of current and emerging trends in information management and database systems, including Oracle databases and Oracle Fusion Middleware, Microsoft SQL Server databases and experience with related technology and processes including information integration services;
  • Advanced change management experience managing multiple enterprise environments with dependencies on multiple systems and maintaining related documentation;
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead and manage projects (small, medium, large) including determining resource requirements, assigning tasks, reviewing progress, and reporting to management;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work effectively with both clients and technical team members;
  • Excellent analytical ability and thorough understanding of large-scale information technology applications and information management practices; 
  • Ability to carry out occasional maintenance outside of regular business hours, as required;
  • Oracle Certified Professional (DBA) certification would be preferred, and Microsoft SQL Server DBA certification and/or experience will be considered an asset, and should be highlighted in your application.
