Lock Out - Tag Out (LOTO) for Ridgetown Campus

The hazards associated with the inadvertent activation of machinery or equipment have the potential for causing severe injuries, including electrocution, burns, chemical exposures, cuts, bruises, crushing, amputation or death. To protect workers from the unexpected start-up or release of stored energy during maintenance or repair activities, such machinery or equipment must be properly locked-out. This course outlines lockout procedures for the control of hazardous energy associated with this machinery or equipment.Topics to be discussed include:

  • legislation in Ontario
  • duties and responsibilities of pertinent individuals
  • identification of forms and sources of hazardous energy
  • evaluation of energy source
  • use of various lockout devices / multiple lockout systems
  • development of machine or process specific procedures
  • lock and tag removal
  • other energy control methods
  • shift or personnel changes

Target Audience: Employees who may be exposed to the hazards associated with the start-up or release of stored energy (electric, mechanical, thermal, potential, steam, pneumatic, hydraulic, chemical, etc.), and their supervisors.
