Outdoor Spill Management

Outdoor spills have the potential to contaminate the environment if they are allowed to enter the University’s storm sewer system, local waterways, or groundwater. Examples of spills include petroleum products, paint, chemicals, and liquids other than water, and materials which, if exposed to rainwater, could become a contaminant. Discharge of these contaminants into a storm sewer, local waterway or groundwater could result in impacts to the environment. Therefore it is important that spills are cleaned-up immediately upon discovery and disposal of spilled materials is done in an environmentally acceptable manner.

This course describes the process for safely responding to outdoor spills and required regulatory reporting.

Target Audience:  Employees who may be required to respond to outdoor spills and their supervisors, well as those employees who may be required to provide support services in an outdoor spill response.
