Surveys

The University takes part in a range of surveys to provide students and alumni with the opportunity to provide feedback.  Results are used to identify strengths and weaknesses and to put in place changes to help improve the living and learning experience for all.

The Office of Institutional Research and Planning oversees the development, administration, analysis, and meaningful interpretation of the results of surveys used in institutional planning. IRP also is responsible for several provincially run surveys, such as:

  • National Survey of Student Engagement
  • Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey
  • Student Voices on Sexual Violence
  • Ontario University Graduate Survey
  • Graduate Program Outcomes Survey

National Survey of Student Engagement

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is a survey administered by universities and colleges across Canada and the United States. Every three years, the University Guelph, along with all of Ontario's universities, participate in NSSE.

NSSE is administered by the Indiana University Centre for Post-secondary Research.  The survey collects information about first-year and senior students' participation in programs and activities that universities provide for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending university.  The survey is administered separately on the Guelph and Guelph-Humber campuses.

Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey

The Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey (CGPSS) is administered on a tri-annual basis by universities from across Canada, including all of Ontario's universities.  To date, graduate students at the University of Guelph have been invited to complete this survey in 2010, 2013, and 2016.

The survey ask graduate students about their satisfaction with their graduate student experience, and explores issues related to professional skills development, research experience, presentations and publications, financial support, and university resources and student life.  As well, the results to this survey can be explored by the following graduate groupings: Master’s with Thesis, Master’s without Thesis and Doctoral.  A third party survey vendor is used to administer this survey.

Ontario University Graduate Survey

Each year, in collaboration with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, graduates of university undergraduate and second-entry undergraduate degree programs are surveyed approximately two years after graduation about their success in finding work through the Ontario University Graduate Survey (OUGS).

The survey responses are used to determine our graduate employment rates at six months and two years.  In addition, students are requested to provide information on:

  • employment status
  • type of employment (permanent, temporary, or seasonal)
  • reason for unemployment (unable to find work, returned to school)
  • intensity of employment (30 hours per week, less than 30 hours per week)
  • level of education required for their employment
  • how closely the employment was related to the skills acquired at university
  • how closely employment was related to their program of study, the salary range for their position

The University of Guelph's results include respondents from both the Guelph and Guelph-Humber campuses.  For more information about the OUGS, please visit: http://www.iaccess.gov.on.ca/OsapRatesWeb/enterapp/home.xhtml.
