Meet Our Newest Team Member!
The Wood Centre is pleased to introduce you to our new Business Incubator Services Manager or more commonly known as our Startup Coach Extraordinaire, Kiran Bains! Kiran will be fearlessly leading our startups through the Hub Start and Hub Build Programs and overseeing our prototyping workshops in the MakerSpace. We are thrilled to have Kiran on the team and look forward to our community getting to know her.
Kiran comes to us with extensive entrepreneurial experience including founding her own Incubator with an emphasis of food startups. Kiran is known locally for her award-winning work on the Upcycle Kitchen project through the Wood Centre and has also completed her MSc from the University of Guelph where she then went on to become a Registered Dietician.
What are you most excited about in this role as the Business Incubator Services Manager?
I absolutely love working with students and seeing them grow and I get even more excited when I see students succeed with bringing a vision and idea into a successful reality! This role is the perfect combination of bringing both of those worlds together!
What is your favourite thing about mentoring startups?
The startup phase is the most exciting phase of a business! I am honored that I get to be there for students during their ups and down and that I get to be their biggest cheerleader from the beginning. I'm also always so baffled by the incredibly creative innovations that UofG students come up with!
Why should startups apply to be part of the Hub Incubator Program?
Previous hub alumni including myself, have noted that the hub incubator program was a place where they could be vulnerable about their struggles as an entrepreneur and appreciated the community environment that they become a part of. Entrepreneurship can often be a lonely road but the hub program addresses that! Also, the networking opportunities are extremely valuable to our students once they join our program.
What makes the Hub Incubator program at UofG special?
UofG itself fosters a community of students that are here to improve life. Not only is this evident in the various programs that are offered on campus, but this is evident through our incubator program. Our entrepreneurs are what make the incubator program. They are humble yet full of incredible wisdom and talent and they're always looking for ways to better the community through their businesses. This is also a focus of our programming. We encourage entrepreneurs to add aspects of social responsibility to their business models.

Housed within the John F. Wood Centre for Business & Student Enterprise (Wood Centre), the Hub is a business incubator designed to support early-stage business ideas with high-potential, but unproven business models. The goal of the Hub is to provide University of Guelph students (undergraduate and graduate) and alumni the opportunity to build a successful business enterprise in a supportive learning environment.
The Hub has a tiered program that ensures a good mix of start-up companies at varying stages of growth. “Hub Start” is for ventures still getting their idea off the ground. These ventures typically have a great team and a great idea, but still have not demonstrated product-market fit with traction. “Hub Build” is for ventures with traction looking to refine their business model and/or scale.
