Get Creative this Valentine’s Day!

For weeks before Valentine’s Day, storefronts everywhere display giant teddy bears, chocolates and roses – but what if we want to give our special someone a more unique and personal gift? Something homemade and designed specifically for this person. Do it yourself projects can be fun, so why not focus this Valentine’s Day on being more creative?

Stephanie Williams, a third year Biomedical Engineering student at the University of Guelph, had the great idea to create something truly unique for her partner when she created customized jibbits to attach to Crocs! Stephanie designed the file herself and watched it come to life in minutes. After printing the base, Stephanie attached googley eyes, creating an accessory that allows her partner to customize their Crocs and the simple print job turned into a clever gift!

The best part about this gift is that in addition to being creative and unique, it was almost completely free! Stephanie tapped into the resources at the John F. Wood Centre’s MakerSpace to get started with 3D printing. The MakerSpace is accessible to all students and provides free 3D printing for jobs under two hours. Students are welcome to print their own personal design, like Stephanie, or print a pre-created file like those found on Thingiverse.

Located in the Second Cup plaza, the MakerSpace is a conveniently located spot for students to check out – to 3D print, prototype, work on projects, and more.

The John F. Wood Centre also offers free 3D printing workshops on how to design your own 3D file, as well as one-on-one training on how to use the 3D printer!

Participate in our next 3D printing workshop, taking place Wednesday, February 13th. The workshop will teach you the basics of creating your own file and requires no prior experience. Register for our next workshop

To receive one-on-one training on the basics of 3D printing, please e-mail mairins@uoguelph.ca.

The MakerSpace offers students the opportunity to test out innovative technology and create special gifts for a loved one, or simply for yourself to bring home! Come visit the Makerspace to unleash your creativity and make this Valentine’s Day a special one!

We are located at 363 Gordon Street and are open Tuesday through Thursday, 11:00am-4:00pm.
