Faculty members in the Department of Management are active in a variety of professional organizations. These organizations are forums for scholarly activity and networking. Many offer students a variety of opportunities, often at a special rate.
AOM - The Academy of Management
The Academy of Management is a leading professional association for scholars that creates community and builds networks with individuals from many disciplines. The Academy is dedicated to creating and disseminating knowledge about management and organizations. It has 24 divisions and interest groups, including:
- Human Resources Management
- International Management
- Operations Management
- Organizational Behaviour
- Research Methods
- Technology and Innovation Management
The Academy of Management publishes four academic journals (AMJ, AMR, AML and AMP). Its annual meeting, held in August, is the largest annual gathering of management scholars in the world.
ASAC - Administrative Sciences Association of Canada
The Administrative Sciences Association of Canada (ASAC) is a national association of university management professors. The association facilitates scholarly communication and interaction among scholars of all functional areas of management. The association publishes the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences (CJAS) and holds an annual conference at which scholars present their academic work.
CPA - Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario
Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (CPA Ontario) is the professional association of chartered professional accountants in Ontario. We are the largest organization of CPAs in the world, responsible for the accreditation, regulation and professional development of more than 22,000 CPAs. We also deliver the CPA program of professional studies to more than 9,000 students.
A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) is a highly skilled accounting professional who provides forward-thinking financial management and business expertise. CPAs make their impact in a variety of roles and industries. They are the consultant developing systems to adapt to change, the auditor analyzing the annual operating budget, the professor teaching tomorrow’s accountants or the controller preparing for the next acquisition. The CPA designation empowers you to take your accounting and finance career to new heights. CHRP - Certified Human Resources Professional
The Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario (HRPAO) is the provincial body that grants the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation for residents of Ontario. This important credential helps our graduates gain recognition and a competitive edge upon graduation. As of 2010, only professionals with a degree (rather than a diploma) will be eligible for the CHRP designation. Certification is not a requirement to practice HRM; however, almost 75% of practicing professionals have the designation. A recent study showed that 75% of graduating students in the Management major had either started their CHRP application or planned to do so.
The Department of Management is committed to ensuring that students in the Management major have the opportunity to complete all of the required academic courses for the CHRP designation. These courses are an integral component of the core requirements for a B.Comm. in Management from the University of Guelph. A list of required courses offered at the University of Guelph are available on the HRPAO website. To access the list, search for the University of Guelph in the school listing. With over 16,000 members in 28 chapters in Ontario and other locations around the world, HRPAO connects its membership to a range of HR information resources, events, professional development, and networking opportunities. The association also annually hosts the second largest HR conference and tradeshow in the world.
IFAMA - International Food and Agribusiness Management Association
The IFAMA is a worldwide leadership forum that brings together top executives, academics, policy makers, students and stakeholders to network and stimulate strategic thinking across the global food and fiber systems.
The association provides a unique one–stop opportunity to build a global network straddling academia, industry and government. Its annual world congress in June provides an exciting forum for academic papers, industry presentations, as well as the IAMA Agribusiness Students Case Competition.
Guelph students have benefited from the significant professional and personal networking opportunities at various IAMA events. At the 2007 Agribusiness Students Case Competition, Guelph’s team of senior undergraduate students placed a close second to a U.S. inter-university team of graduate students, after a fierce competition with 7 other teams from around the world.
Through the IAMA, undergraduate and graduate students move ahead of the pack by participating in seminars on current issues and interacting with senior industry, government and academics from around the world.
STLHE - Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
The Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education is a national association of academics, administrators and educational developers committed to advancing the quality of teaching and learning in higher education. Julia Christensen Hughes is a former president of STLHE.
