Answers to first year questions

Q: Can anyone transfer to the MGMT major, or is the major just for existing LOM majors?

A: No, you do not have to be a LOM major to transfer to the MGMT major.

Q: In September 2019 I will be in my second year, how will this change impact me?

A: If you are entering your third semester in fall 2019 you have the following options available to you:

  • You can choose to transfer to the MGMT major at the end of your first year (Spring 2019) or you can remain in your current BComm major (including LOM).
  • If you choose to transfer to MGMT you may be eligible to apply for the MGMT: Co-op option. The deadline to apply will be mid-March 2019—further details will be sent via email in late February.
  • If you take all courses the 2018/2019 undergraduate calendar specified for the LOM major in your first year, you could still graduate in spring 2022 with a Management Major, the Human Resource Minor (or different minor) and Leadership Certificate.
  • You would take MGMT*1200 in fall 2019.

Q: Are first year BComm students transferring to the MGMT major also able to complete the HR Minor?

A: Yes, most students that are transferring to the MGMT major in their second year will have enough free electives to complete all of the required new Management courses and the HR minor requirements in their remaining three years.   We recommend that you speak to the MGMT faculty advisor Connie Zavitz (czavitz@uoguelph.ca) to create a customized schedule of studies.

Q: Are BComm students transferring to the MGMT major also able to complete the Leadership Certificate?

A: Yes. Management majors are able to complete the Leadership Certificate.
*Previously LOM majors were unable to complete the Leadership Certificate.

Q: Do LOM students have to transfer to the Management major?

A: No. It is just an option. Anyone initially enrolled in the LOM major, can still finish their bachelor’s degree with the Leadership and Organizational Management major. Note: fall 2018 was the last cohort of new students admitted to the LOM major.
