Student life in photos
We asked one of our Hospitality and Tourism Management students to take photos of their favourite aspects of their student experience. See what Karen De Leon loves most about being a #GuelphBComm student.
Case Competition Success
“After weeks of practice, the Guelph team at the Hospitality and Tourism Case Competition cleaned up and took home some hardware. I’ve competed with these two ladies since last year, and we are so grateful and humbled to have placed first in this year’s competition in the Tourism category. Hard work and practice really does pay off!"
Preparing for the HTCC
“Teamwork and team dynamic is so important during case competitions. The HTCC (Hospitality & Tourism Case Competition) team met up one day outside of practice to go over financial analyses and industry trends so that we could all learn from each other. Even though we are competing against each other, we still represent Guelph as a team, so making sure that we share our knowledge is key.”
Job Expo Workshop
“This year, HFTMSA partnered with the Business Career Development Centre to hold a career prep workshop for first and second year HFTM students. We wanted them to feel prepared and confident to attend the annual Job Expo HFTM holds each year."
The Annual Job Expo
"The Job Expo was attended by industry representatives to recruit summer and co-op students. This year we had a record 180+ students in attendance!”
Volunteering as a Peer Helper
“As a Senior Peer Helper at Co-op and Career Services I have had the pleasure of meeting students from many different programs. It’s such a great experience being able to help other students with their resumes or cover letters; but, it’s an even better experience learning about what other students are engaging in on campus and how each program is different at U of G.”
“One of the most fun aspects of being in HAFA are the hotel tours. The Guelph Chapter of the Hotel Association of Canada recently held a hotel tour in Niagara on the Lake. We visited three different, historic hotels that each had a defined character. This hotel is the Queen’s Landing and it was absolutely beautiful!”
"I am the intern for the University of Guelph Sustainable Restaurant Project (UGSRP). This year, the theme of our annual symposium was Responsible Seafood in the Restaurant Industry. We welcomed industry representatives, special guests, and the Guelph community to join in learning about responsible seafood and the future of sustainability in restaurants. In my role on UGSRP, I MC’d the event and the dinner that followed. It was a great opportunity to network with industry and faculty, use my presentation and communication skills, and eat some delicious food."
“Being the VP of the Hospitality, Food, and Tourism Management Student Association this year has been so rewarding. Each week we meet up as a team to discuss our current events and other initiatives, and to organize what’s coming up for our organization. As a student leader, learning to balance school and extra-curricular activities can sometimes be tough, but it’s always worth it.”
