GUELPH, Ont. (Tuesday, November 2, 2010) – The University of Guelph’s College of Management and Economics (CME) ranked second among business schools of medium-sized universities in The Globe and Mail’s recent Canadian University Report. The annual national survey of students compares universities of similar size in 60 categories, and bills itself as “the first to grade universities based on what their students said about them.”

CME received an A in the Overall Satisfaction category, placing second in Canada among business schools at medium-sized universities. CME also received an A grade in Overall Quality of Education and Availability of Faculty to Students Outside of Class. Strong grades (A-) were also received in Teaching Quality, Level of Interaction with Faculty, Class Size and Degree to Which University Experience Will Prepare You for Employment.

With all Business and Commerce categories combined, CME finished with an A- average, strong enough for a second-place tie with Université de Sherbrooke and Wilfrid Laurier University, with only Queen’s University’s School of Business being ranked higher among medium-sized Canadian universities.

CME Dean Julia Christensen Hughes said the results are even more impressive because they come from students themselves.

“It’s one thing for a university or a school of business to make a particular claim,” Dr. Christensen Hughes said. “But to hear it from the students, who have come through our programs, is very validating of the working we are doing at CME.”

Dr. Christensen Hughes said she is particularly impressed with how CME fared in the education and teaching categories.

“This is further testament to our commitment to transformational learning and ensuring our students are getting the most from their classroom experiences,” Dr. Christensen Hughes said. “The University traditionally fares extremely well in these types of surveys, and it’s nice to see CME singled out here for our efforts.”
