CBE faculty receive prestigious U of G research awards

Three faculty from the College of Business and Economics (CBE) have been named recipients of the University of Guelph’s research awards. These awards recognize excellence and innovation for researchers on the path to becoming world leaders, and whose success has already set them apart on the global stage. The awards are based on scholarly output, knowledge innovation and training of highly qualified personnel.

Professors Rene Kirkegaard (Department of Economics and Finance) and Towhidul Islam (Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies) have received the Research Leadership Chair award, which recognizes research excellence of senior level faculty who have proven records of distinguished and sustained scholarly work.

Rene Kirkegaard

Professor Rene Kirkegaard is a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Risk Management and Regulation. He is a leading authority in auction theory, contract theory, and the economics of information. He currently has 11 papers published in tier 1 journals and has received three consecutive SSHRC research grants as the principle investigator. The majority of Kirkegaard's publications are listed in the top 3% of Research Papers in Economics (RePEc) database.

Towhidul Islam

Professor Towhidul Islam research explores consumer choice and innovation diffusion to further understand human behavior and improve decision-making. He has published over 42-refereed articles (h-index 25 and over 2,900 citations) and his work has appeared in the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Consumer Psychology, and Management Science among other outlets. His current research is funded by a $357,322 grant from SSHRC, exploring big data analytics. Professor Islam has previously held a University Research Chair.

Tanya Mark

Associate professor Tanya Mark (Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies) has received the Research Excellence Award, which recognizes research excellence of recently tenured faculty. Mark’s research focuses on building models of customer relationships and brand management using big data. Her most recent paper in Journal of Retailing won the publications award for best paper of 2016. Mark was recently a co-applicant for an OMAFRA research grant worth approximately $500,000.

In other faculty news:

Associate professor Scott Colwell (Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies) has been given Chartered Statistician (CStat) accreditation by the Royal Statistical Society. The CStat is the highest professional award given by the Royal Statistical Society and provides formal recognition of Colwell’s statistical qualifications, professional training and experience. Colwell has also been given Professional Statistician (PStat) accreditation by the American Statistical Association.
