The Arrell Food Institute at the University of Guelph recently released the recipients for the Arrell Food Institute graduate scholarship, a scholarship worth $50,000 a year. Congratulations to Andrew Nixon, PhD in the School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management, who is the first Arrell Scholar in the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics.

Working under the supervision of Lang professor Simon Somogyi, Nixon will focus on how farm businesses can transition from primary processing to creating value-added branded products for international export.

"Canada can become the global leader in providing safe, trusted food and my research will help achieve this vision by helping our individual farm businesses take advantage of new technologies to improve their sustainability and traceability as they transition to value-adding and brand creation," said Nixon.

The Arrell Food Institute graduate scholarship recipients are selected based on academic excellence and community engagement efforts. Congratulations to all recipients!

Andrew Nixon's research was recently featured for it's focus on using business to improve life. As a master's student, Nixon used his research to help improve Ontario farmers' resiliency by adopting new techniques and technologies to combat climate change.
