Last month, the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics celebrated the incredible academic achievements of Lang accounting students at the annual Academic Excellence in Accounting Awards Dinner.

The dinner is an opportunity to recognize accounting students with strong academic and leadership background, in addition to providing students the opportunity to network with industry partners. Over 60 people attended the event, including industry representatives from Manulife, Caissa LLP, CPA Ontario, KPMG LLP, Accounttemps, Canada Revenue Agency, Linamar, Baker Tilly, and RLB LLP.

At the event, the winners of this year’s Academic Excellence in Accounting awards and several scholarship awards were announced.

The Academic Excellence in Accounting Awards are presented each year to students who achieve a grade of 80 per cent or higher in ACCT*3230, 3330 and 3340. Congratulations to the 2019 recipients:

 

Several other scholarships were also awarded, including the Bill Brohman Memorial Scholarship, the CPA Ontario Scholarship, the Caissa LLP Scholarship in Accounting, and the Waterloo-Wellington CPA Association Scholarship.

Bill Brohman Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of Bill Brohman, this award recognizes an Accounting student who has completed between 10.5 and 15.0 credits with a minimum 75% cumulative average. The winner is also chosen based on academic achievement, involvement in extracurricular activities, and a demonstrated interest in a career in accountancy.

Congratulations to Lauren Grant on receiving this award. Lauren has worked in the accounting field for the past three years while simultaneously completing her BComm. She aspires to be a CPA after completion of her undergrad degree. Outside of school, Lauren is involved in many extra-curricular activities, including her role as the treasurer of a local charity and tutoring students in her spare time.

CPA of Ontario Scholarship

This award recognizes a student registered in the Accounting major of the Bachelor of Commerce program with a minimum cumulative average of 75% who has completed 15.0 credits, including three electives in a non-accounting area. The successful applicant must demonstrate the positive impact of their completed non-accounting electives toward a career as a CPA and the intent to pursue a CPA designation within 2 years of graduation.

Congratulations to Kyle Hayden Rodrigues on receiving this award, an accounting student with a minor in Marketing. Kyle has won many accounting case competitions over consecutive years. Enrolling in several electives has given Kyle the opportunity to work closely with faculty members and other students on a funding project for various First Nation initiatives. Kyle aspires to be a CPA and will complete the CPA PEP program after graduation.

Caissa LLP Scholarship in Accounting

This scholarship is awarded to a student registered in the Accounting major who has completed at least 10.0 credits with a minimum 75% cumulative average. The recipient is also selected based on demonstrated leadership experience which may include, but is not limited to, employment within the Accounting industry, co-operative educational placements, involvement in school clubs, sports teams or events, and extracurricular volunteer activities.

Congratulations to Michael McAtamney on receiving his award. Michael has been actively employed in the accounting field as a summer intern at a mid-size accounting firm where he builds on his technical, analytical and communication skills while working on public company audit and review engagements. He is the marketing manager for the Accounting Society of Guelph (ASG) at the University and has assisted in promoting many of their events including the Crack-the-case competition. Michael is also an avid soccer player and competes in the intramural league at the University.

Waterloo-Wellington CPA Association Scholarship

This award recognizes a student registered in the Accounting major of the Bachelor of Commerce program who has completed between 4.5 and 12.5 credits with a minimum 80% average in their accounting (ACCT) courses. The recipient is selected based on a 100-word or less statement describing why they intend to pursue a career as a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and a resume that includes activities demonstrating involvement in the local community.

Congratulations to Jake Vogel Mathers on receiving this award. In addition to excellent academic achievement, Jake also recently attained black belt status in Tae Kwon Do. He has also won the “Personality of the year award” for exemplifying positive attributes and qualities with high academic standing and participation in scholastic and extra-curricular activities.
