The University of Guelph recently announced the 2020 recipients for the President’s and Chancellor’s Scholarships, the University’s top entrance awards for incoming undergraduate students.

Among the recipients are two incoming Lang commerce students, Grace Wylie (Management, Co-op) and Daniel Neiterman (Accounting, Co-op).

Grace Wylie received a Lincoln Alexander Chancellor’s Scholarship, which recognizes top students who have made significant community contributions and who are Indigenous, a member of a visible minority or a person with a disability. Grace helped found a safe school space for students and led an Indigenous studies club to promote broader understanding of First Nations issues. She mentored with the Big/Little Sister program and recruited donors for Canadian Blood Services, all while captain of the volleyball team and running drama and dance events.

“My interest in responsible leadership and business management stems from an opportunity I had last year to combine my passions for well-being and environmental sustainability in a way that served my high school community,” said Grace Wylie. “I repurposed our unused loggia into an area for mental and physical rest and relaxation, resulting in the creation of Café 1874, which is truly a representation of my combined love for human and ecological health and wellness. One day I aim to create a professional space that combines my passions of mental and physical well-being, as well as environmental sustainability in a way that holistically cares for society.”

Daniel Neiterman received a President’s Scholarship, which recognize high school achievements, leadership abilities and citizenship activities. Daniel received the Navy League of Canada Medal of Excellence for community service with various organizations. He organized concerts to raise money for HIV/AIDS research, volunteered for a school leadership camp, and founded a Jewish culture club and was inaugural president of the National Congregation of Synagogue Youth.

“For me, giving back to the community feels like the least I can do for a country that has provided me with so many opportunities and a safe place to live and be myself,” said Daniel Neiterman. “Everywhere I have gone, I have made it my mission to improve life for others through my volunteer work. My university experience will be no different. I will do my best to make life at the university more enjoyable for everyone, and be the driving force that brings about positive changes within the community.”

The President’s and Chancellor’s Scholarships are worth $42,000 over four years and include an opportunity for a summer research assistantship worth an additional $9,000. Recipients are teamed with a faculty mentor in their academic discipline.
