'Investing in peace' topic of ninth annual Hopper Lecture

Dr. Nafis Sadik, an obstetrician/gynecologist who is a special adviser to the United Nations secretary general will deliver the 2001 Hopper Lecture on International Development Oct. 23 at the University of Guelph.

Sadik will speak on “Investing in Peace: Demography, Gender and Reproductive Health” at 7:30 p.m. in Room 113 of the MacNaughton Building. She will meet with the audience following her talk. The lecture, the ninth annual in the Hopper series, is free and open to the public. It is funded by a grant from the International Development Research Centre and is co-ordinated by U of G's Centre for International Programs.

Sadik, who is originally from Pakistan, is also the former executive director of the UN Population Fund. Her career has focused on global population and gender issues. She will also be on campus Oct. 22 and 23 for class visits and informal meetings.
