Bee Beard Descriptive Transcript Summary: Members of the Honey Bee Research Centre show how to build and remove a bee beard. 0:06 - 00:25 [The video opens with footage of a man wearing a bee beard. The text “Bee Beard” fades in. The screen cuts to a montage of seven shots showcasing honey bees and different elements of the research centre, ending with footage of a bee taking off from a yellow flower as the logo for the Honey Bee Research Centre fades in.] 00:27 - 00:37 [Cut to wide shot of Paul Kelly speaking in the apiary surrounded by bee hives.] Paul Kelly: We are going to do some bee beards today. We have a few volunteers that are stepping up to do this. So the first thing we do is we cage the queen. 00:37 - 01:19 [Paul holds a short white tube on a string, which is a cage for a queen.] Paul: We found the queen in this colony [Camera pans down to hive full of bees.], we've set the supers off, [Camera pans to supers off to the side of the hive and returns to Paul holding the cage.] and we cage the queen and we are going to make a necklace out of this queen, so it will be suspended from the bearder's chin like so [Paul holds queen cage up to chin.] and it's ideal if you have a good nectar flow happening here, sometimes people will move the hive away so the field bees aren't there you are just dealing with young bees, but we have some brave volunteers today so we're not going to bother with any of that we're just going to shake the bees right out of here. So we'll tie the queen on, we'll take frames out, we'll shake them onto a cloth and then we'll pour them on to the bearder. Let's go. 01:22 - 01:42 [Cut to Paul tying queen cage around IvanÕs neck.] Paul: Now breathe, breathe deeply Ivan. It only stings right? Ivan: Alright Paul: Only stings. So we've got Ivan here and we have Stephanie both volunteering. [Camera pans over to Stephanie who is wearing a queen bee cage. She waves at the camera. Camera pans back to Ivan.] There we go and we've got our bee queen necklaces on. 01:42 - 02:20 Paul: We've set up a little station here, so we are going to be shaking the bees onto this feed bag here [Camera pans over to Paul kneeling by a white feed bag on the grass.] and then we'll pour the bees on. [Camera pans back to Paul and Ivan.] Ivan will provide a support. He's going to keep his arms tight to his body so the bees don't get underneath his armpits there and then he is going to create a little shelf like so [Paul adjusts IvanÕs arms so they are crossed in front of his body and turned upwards so his arms and hands form a shelf.] so that when we pour the bees they have a platform to land on then the bees can run up and hang from his chin. We are basically simulating a bee swarm where they would hang on a tree branch, so there's a nice little tree branch we got here. Let's go with the bees. 02:20 - 2:46 [Cut to Paul shaking bees from a frame on to the piece of white material on top of the feed bag. Paul folds the material to trap the bees and transfers them on to Ivan.] Paul: Actually I think the newspaper worked better. Well we got a few bees there. 02:47 - 03:07 [Cut to time lapse footage of person placing bees on Stephanie to the point where bees cover her upper torso.] 03:07 - 03:22 [Cut to Paul using a smoke puffer to puff smoke on bees that now cover IvanÕs chin, neck and shoulders.] Voice one in background: Good job Ivan. Voice two in background: Steph now what you should actually do is go on a wee little walk. I'll follow you around. 03:20 - 03:37 [Cut to close up of Ivan with his completed bee beard.] Paul: I think that's a done beard. Voice one in background: That's looking very good. Looking good. Paul: Got my Ontario Farm Association card [Paul uses card the size of a credit card to move bees on Ivan.] here to work with here, because we are bee farmers after all. 03:41 Š 03:59 Paul: Good, now let's go for a walk. [Cut to footage of Paul and Ivan walking outside in the apiary. Cut to footage of Stephanie and another individual walking outside.] Voice two in background to Stephanie: You can stop there that's a good photo.[Cut to Stephanie standing outside, giving two thumbs up, with bee hives in the background] 03:59 - 04:26 [Cut to Paul and Ivan. IvanÕs bee beard covers from his chest up to his eyes.] Paul: So Ivan is just about ready to get these bees taken off, as you might be able to tell. What he's going to do is give a sharp jolt, so that the bees fall down at the entrance of their own colony and then they can run in. You do get some bees inside your shirt when you do this maybe and a few extra bees around, so we do have a bee blower here that we are going to use to blow the rest of the bees off. I'll get that started and then Ivan will do the jolt. 04:26 Š 05:51 [Paul kneels down to the ground and starts the motor of the bee blower. Once itÕs started, he stands up, places the strap of the blower on his shoulder and moves toward Ivan to instruct him on how to remove the bees.] Paul: OK Ivan, so jump up high in the air and then land with a jolt so the bees fall in front of you. Right, right where you are, right now. [Ivan jumps and lands jolting his upper body forward.] Paul: Good. Now step back and do it again. Do it again. [Ivan repeats the jump to remove more bees.] Paul: Good. OK ready? Here we go. [Paul blows the rest of the bees off of Ivan with the blower, blowing air on top and inside his shirt. When most of the bees are gone, Paul removes the queen cage from Ivan’s neck and then continues blowing the remaining bees off.] Paul: You're done. Voice 3 in background: He runs away and never comes back. Ivan: I had one here. [Ivan touches his chin.] Female voice in background: One? 05:51 - 06:56 [Cut to Paul removing queen cage from underneath StephanieÕs full bee beard.] Paul: Gradually take her out of there. There we go and we'll lay her by the entrance there. [Paul lays queen cage by hive entrance.] So what you are going to do is come over [Paul leads Stephanie instructs her on how to remove the bees.] and stand right here and shake with your head. You'll come this way here. Great. And I'll get the bee blower going and what you'll do is you'll tip your head forward and jolt, and then you step back once and jolt again. You do that twice and then I'll blow the bees off and then if you want you can go around behind the hives there to take your shirt off but the camera won't follow her, OK? We'll all look the other way, but it's up to you whether you want or need to do that. The queen's right at the entrance, so don't jump there. OK, we'll get the blower going. 06:56 - 07:54 [Paul walk over to blower and turns it on and walks back over to Stephanie.] Paul: Alright. [Stephanie jolts forward to remove bees.] Paul: Good. Step back. [Stephanie repeats the jolt.] Paul: Good. One more. Stephanie: One more? Paul: One more. Yep. Great. [Stephanie repeats the jolt. Paul removes the remainder of the bees with the blower.] Paul: You're good. You want to go over take your shirt off over there behind the bee hives and clear out those last few ones inside. [Paul walks toward the camera.] Paul: She did great didn't she? That was wonderful.
