[Music fades out] They want to maximize net income. They also want to be sustainable. [University of Guelph logo and text fade out] The reason why feed efficiency is very important is because it costs a lot of money. Feed costs more than 60 percent of producing poultry, so if you improve the feed efficiency you actually improve the profitability of the farmer. To give you an example, in Ontario we produce 200 million birds and if you have a 2 kilo bird at slaughter, if you improve feed efficiency by just 1 percent, you save the farmers in Ontario about 3 million dollars, by just that 1 percent improvement. So that's why it is very important to see feed efficencies improve and we look for ways to be able to actually produce that bird with less in terms of feed. 0:53 - 1:12 [Screen flahses to video of Prof. Elijah Kiarie on a background of an empty lecture hall] Elijah: There is a lot of demand in people with advanced degrees in poultry nutrition. The industry is growing, as you know most people are consuming poultry and poultry will be the most consumed meat in the future. [Music fades in] So we really need the scientists to be able to drive that growth in poultry. 1:13 - 1:18 [Screen fades in to show OAC logo on a white background, red website link] Text: www.uoguelph.ca/oac [Screen fades to black]
