Improving Animal and Human Health Outcomes Through Science

The thesis-based Master of Science (M.Sc.) program in the Department of Clinical Studies offers a unique, research-intensive opportunity to advance both animal and human health. Embedded within Ontario’s only veterinary college, the program provides unparalleled access to naturally occurring veterinary clinical disorders, a full spectrum of veterinary care, and community-based practice. Its cross-disciplinary approach fosters innovation in clinical and comparative medical research, giving students a rich and hands-on educational experience across a wide range of species and specialties.

This program is ideal for individuals passionate about improving health outcomes through science. Students gain expertise in the scientific process, clinical trials, pre-clinical and comparative research and scientific communication. With a strong foundation in spontaneously arising disease models and interdisciplinary collaboration, graduates are prepared to tackle complex medical challenges and contribute meaningful advancements in both veterinary and human medicine.

Students have access to cutting-edge facilities, specialized labs, advanced imaging and surgical equipment, 15,000+ sq ft of clinical research space and Ontario’s only veterinary teaching hospital, which serves as a hub for clinical research and training.
Diverse Fields of Study
The program offers learning opportunities across veterinary medicine and surgery, including exposure to spectrum of care approaches and community medicine. Students can also pursue specializations in One Health, Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine.
Careers After Graduation
M.Sc. graduates are well-prepared for diverse career paths in veterinary medicine, human medicine or comparative medical research. They may pursue roles in government, clinical research or across the animal health and care sectors.
Future Learning Opportunities
Future learning opportunities include advanced degrees such as DVM, D.V.Sc., PhD, PharmD, and M.D., as well as certification in Clinical Trials Management and professional pathways like veterinary internships and residencies.

Program Overview and Admission Requirements

Program Start: Fall, Winter or Summer semester (Rolling)

Domestic Application Deadlines: Fall—July 1; Winter—November 1; Summer—March 1. Applications must be in by 11:59 p.m. EST.

International Application Deadlines: Fall—March 1; Winter—July 1; Summer—November 1. Applications must be in by 11:59 p.m. EST.

Duration: Two years (six semesters)

Structure

The M.Sc. in Clinical Studies involves a minimum of six semesters of full-time study, including a minimum of three 0.50 credit graduate level courses. Candidates are required to carry out an independent research study and produce a thesis. Course selection is made by the student in consultation with the advisory committee, tailored to the student’s research interest and approved by the departmental Graduate Studies and Research Committee.

How to Secure a Faculty Advisor

Students in the M.Sc. in Clinical Studies complete their program under the guidance of a faculty advisor, who must be confirmed before applying through OUAC. Only applications with a confirmed advisor from the Department of Clinical Studies will be considered. Access the faculty list to become familiar with their fields of study and for their contact information.

When contacting faculty members, applicants are advised to include a current CV (resume), transcript, and a Statement of Interest (a one-page letter outlining academic interests and career goals that motivate the pursuit of graduate studies). Early contact is recommended, as developing an initial expression of interest into a defined plan of study may take time.

Applicants should discuss the following items with prospective advisors: the nature of the project, in-person expectations, and elective courses.

Admission Requirements

  • Letters of reference from two individuals who can adequately evaluate the academic and research capabilities of the applicant must accompany all applications.

  • Applications must also include a short statement of the applicant's area of interest and career goals to assist in the selection of faculty advisors.

Funding

A minimum stipend threshold must be met. Please discuss stipends with your potential advisor.
