Graduate Studies

University of Guelph GryphonWelcome to the Graduate Program in Political Science at the University of Guelph.

The Graduate Program in Political Science offers a dynamic and engaging environment for Masters and Doctoral study. Our Master’s program offers students the opportunity to specialize in the politics of Rights, Justice, Citizenship, and Identity. Who we are, where we belong, and what we are entitled to have been central to political conflict for a very long time, but are arguably even more pressing in today’s era of globalization, cross-border mobility and rights consciousness. The Department also offers a PhD program with new areas of specialization. Like many programs, we offer students the opportunity to concentrate on traditional subfields of political science, in particular Canadian Politics, Comparative Politics, and International Relations. But our program also offers the opportunity to specialize in fields where our department boasts specific expertise, namely in Law and Politics, Public Policy and Governance, and Gender, Race, Indigeneity and Sexuality.

The Department has wide-ranging and various expertise in each of these fields. In addition to these thematic interests, the department offers regional specializations in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and the United States. Our faculty can provide you with the mentoring to develop your own research interests and skill sets.

The Graduate Program in Political Science takes pride in its faculty to student ratio, meaning that students benefit from smaller classes and greater individual attention. Every year, the department accepts approximately 12 to 15 students in the MA program, and 3-4 students into the PhD program. The Graduate Program in Political Science provides financial assistance to most MAs and to all PhDs - and the latter are guaranteed support for up to four academic years. Our students have had success in competing for external funding including OGS and SSHRC.

The Graduate Program in Political Science has an excellent record for placing its students in competitive Doctoral programs, including the University of Toronto, the University of British Columbia and the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, as well as federal Parliamentary and Ontario Legislative Internship programs in the volunteer sector. Graduates of the Political Science MA are engaged in a wide range of careers with academic institutions, government and public sector agencies, non-governmental organizations, and industry.
