How to Apply

Masters Admission Requirements: 

The department requires a four year Honours BA degree in Political Science with a minimum B+ (77-79%) Grade Point Average in the last two years of their BA (approximately 18-20 credits). 

Students with a BA in a field of Social Science other than Political Science are also encouraged to apply. If accepted, they will be expected to successfully complete additional qualifying courses during their first two semesters in the program.

A methodology course is necessary for admission to the graduate program. Students not satisfying this requirement may be admitted with the provision that it be satisfied by completing the requisite extra course. Students are also expected to have an adequate working knowledge of a language in addition to English if that is needed for their particular course of study.

The application must include:

  • the online application
  • all transcripts
  • 1-3 page statement of research interest
  • English equivalency exam such as a TOEFL is required if the applicant's first language is
  • other than English
  • two academic reference letters and assessment forms (An electronic Referee Assessment Form will be sent directly to the referees listed in your online application. These documents will also be submitted electronically on your behalf.)

Doctoral Admission Requirements:

The department requires a MA degree in Political Science with at least an A- grade point average for consideration for admission to the program.

Students with a MA in a field of Social Science other than Political Science are also encouraged to apply. If accepted, they will be expected to successfully complete additional qualifying courses during their first two semesters in the program.

A methodology course is necessary for admission to the graduate program. Students not satisfying this requirement may be admitted with the provision that it be satisfied by completing the requisite extra course. Students are also expected to have an adequate working knowledge of a language in addition to English if that is needed for their particular course of study.

  • Writing sample (no longer than 30 pages)
  • English equivalency exam such as a TOEFL is required if the applicant's first language is
  • other than English. 
  • two academic reference letters and assessment forms (An electronic Referee Assessment Form will be sent directly to the referees listed in your online application.  These documents will also be submitted electronically on your behalf.)

September is the only entry point for the Masters and Doctoral Programs. The next deadline to apply and upload all required documents is January 2019..  We strongly recommend that applicants apply at least a month before that deadline to ensure that they have sufficient time to gain access to upload their required documents.
